Savoring the Flavor of Life: A Culinary Journey Through Xochitl Taqueria’s Vibrant Culture in Brooklyn, NY

The spring sun was shining brightly in the clear blue sky, casting a warm glow over the cobblestone streets of Dumbo. I had just finished up an Alluvion Media photoshoot for an interior design project and was feeling peckish. As I made my way down the street, I spotted a sign that read “Xochitl Taqueria – Authentic Mexican Restaurant & Bar” and my curiosity was piqued.

I walked inside and was immediately struck by the vibrant atmosphere. The walls were adorned with colorful art and beautifully bedazzled hats (I’m into hats lately), and the smell of spices and fresh ingredients wafted through the air. Upbeat Mexican tunes elevated my mood even higher and I was ready for lunch!

While I was waiting for food and enjoying a delicious mango margarita I remember a conversation I had with the interior designer of the project I just photographed. We talked about the trend towards ditching minimalism in design, and how this minimalist trend felt almost inhumane because it often sacrifices color and flavor in favor of cost-cutting measures that rather come across as institutionalism rather than minimalism. As humans, we crave the richness and vibrancy of different cultures, we crave genuine beauty which sometimes is totally opposite of perfection. And at that moment, I realized that this restaurant experience was a perfect example of that.

As I ordered a simple meal of Dominican Roasted Chicken with rice and beans to complement my amazing mango margarita, I couldn’t help but relish every bite and sip. It was as if the flavors were doing a joyful dance on my taste buds, transporting me to the lively streets of Mexico.

As a world traveler and photographer, I’ve been fortunate to experience the beauty and richness of countless cultures. And in that moment, I realized that it’s the simple pleasures, like a delicious meal at a vibrant restaurant, that truly allows us to appreciate the flavor of life. That’s what human-centric minimalism is and perhaps this is why we reject the Scandinavian/institutional/corporate version of it and now going with maximalism all the way 🙂
