My Bodybuilding coaching clients are predominantly Millennials, the generation currently holding the most purchasing power in the United States and around the globe. In addition, they are at the right age to take up a fantastic hobby such as bodybuilding.

Athletes from the millennial generation, and specifically bodybuilders, differ greatly from those of the previous generation. In terms of goals and motivation, there are several factors that set them apart. In the first place, they are very environmentally and health-conscious. For millennial bodybuilders, sustainable goals (and not short-term efforts) will be the key to realizing their long-term wellness goals.

Next, social media and communications technology have fundamentally revolutionized the entertainment and publishing industries (including all of the sports, and especially bodybuilding). As a result of these advances in technology, millennials are more likely to prefer online coaching than in-person coaching. With access to technology 24/7, they find it more convenient to train with a mobile coach via an app at their fingertips.

With the information I have gathered about millennials and having my brand and approach virtually introduced to them via marketing, I know that my bodybuilding clients are prepared for a lifelong journey to happiness, health, vitality, and an enviable body. Additionally, they do not want to sacrifice their mental and physical health and want to balance bodybuilding with their many other priorities. Moreover, I know from my marketing research that there is a 95% chance that the competition they are preparing for in 12 months won’t be the one on stage, and the judges won’t be professional bodybuilders. The daily competition and validation of one’s achievements in life tend to occur primarily on Instagram and other less visually appealing social networks with everyone serving as a judge, moral supporter, and increasingly, a collective benefactor that sponsors one’s journey even financially.

As a hobby, bodybuilding doesn’t pay the bills, and incorporating new and quite demanding routines into daily life comes at a cost. With student loans and new mortgages, the stakes are high when trying to make time for a hobby that doesn’t make money. You’ll learn possible strategies to fit bodybuilding training into the day, including going to sleep earlier and starting the day earlier, taking short hikes in the woods on weekends, or playing tennis at the club. Finding a job with a flexible schedule is a great idea too: I myself worked in a wonderful company that allowed (and encouraged!) me to work out during lunch breaks.

Globally, the workforce is shifting toward independent contractors and freelancers, which means aspiring Instagram bodybuilders have a great opportunity here. As a personal branding coach, I advise my clients to begin building the foundation of their personal brand, which could pave the way to eventually monetizing the non-paying hobby.

Developing beautiful symmetrical muscles isn’t enough to make it big as an Instagram celebrity, so Millennial bodybuilders do need some art direction, lighting, and photography skills to get their body to come across as worthy for the Instagram judges. Setting Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, and Timely goals when it comes to muscle development and strength gains is also SMART and my book “The Secrets of Natural Bodybuilding” will definitely teach you to set those goals.

It doesn’t take much to motivate someone to live a healthy and happy life. It is harder to motivate people to be more disciplined. Visualization could be an important tool for helping us move toward what we see. There is no shortage of visual inspiration available to Millennial Bodybuilders thanks to social media. Taking daily gym selfies is a great way to understand your progress and gain peer support, and I recommend that to my clients.
