I was recently asked to give some motivational tips for those of you who don’t have access to a gym or don’t want to use one. So here are a few things that I do when it comes to working out at home.

Think About Who You Want To Be

If you’re looking to get in shape and lose weight, start by thinking about who you want to be. Don’t think just about how you look, but who you want to be in your own eyes. What kind of person do you see yourself as? How do you want others to see and perceive you? You can’t motivate yourself to work out if that motivation isn’t genuine. Healthy people who take care of their bodies are much happier than those who are obese, sick, and live a sedentary lifestyle.

Don’t Compare Yourself To Others

Stop comparing yourself to others! It’s only going to lead to frustration. No matter how hard you work or how much progress you make, you won’t ever have someone else’s body. We are all built differently and there is no right way or wrong way of getting fit.

Challenge Yourself

When it comes to motivation, one of your biggest allies is a good challenge. This can be anything from setting a specific goal like running a race or riding in a bike race to creating challenges for yourself—like biking more often or doing 100 pushups every day. The key here is to keep challenging yourself—as you succeed, new challenges will present themselves and help drive you forward. (If getting fit isn’t challenging enough on its own, check out our top tips from fitness trainer Maxwell Alexander.)

Commit To What’s (or Who is!) Important to You

To get motivated to work out at home, first define what’s important to you. Maybe that means committing to a healthier lifestyle so you can spend more time with your family or maybe it means getting stronger so you can take on extra responsibilities at work. Once you’ve identified what’s motivating you, use those feelings to keep yourself going. Set attainable goals and remind yourself why these things are important to you.

Don’t Give Up

One of my favorite motivational tips is to keep a list of your goals. Find something that inspires you, write it down, and then post it where you’ll see it every day. You can make it even more visual with inspirational fitness photography. Every time you hit a milestone or get discouraged, go back to your list. The first thing I do when I wake up and every night before bed is read over my goals—it helps me stay focused on them!

Take Care Of Your Body

If you’re going to be exercising regularly at home, it’s important to take care of your body after a workout. Eat a hearty snack and drink plenty of water. Also, pay attention to what you’re doing. We all know that soreness after exercise is natural and fine—but don’t push yourself so hard that you seriously injure yourself! Think about things like stretching out your joints, doing warm-ups, etc.

Get Moving!

Don’t focus too much on what others around you are doing—focus instead on yourself and your progress. Stop looking in the mirror at how out of shape you are; look into it to remind yourself of all that you have accomplished, regardless of how small or large those accomplishments may be to everyone else. Get moving! Sweat is not only a great way to get fit, but it also feels amazing after a long day at work!

Turn Off the TV/Disconnect From Technology and Social Media

When you’re working out at home, there’s no substitute for motivation. But sometimes inspiration is hard to come by. To keep yourself from slacking off in your workout, do whatever it takes to turn off distractions like TV and technology. Put up a whiteboard where you can write down your exercise goals or set up some of those old-school New Year’s resolutions and display them prominently so that every time you walk past, you feel motivated to work out.

Stay Healthy by Eating Clean

Eating clean is more than just buying organic food—it’s about nourishing your body with high-quality, nutrient-dense ingredients. Eating healthy means focusing on eating whole foods like vegetables, fruits, and lean proteins; it also means cutting out unhealthy processed foods in order to promote a healthy lifestyle that’s conducive to fitness.

Have Fun!

The most important step to getting motivated is having fun. I’m not going to get all Tony Robbins on you and pretend that it’s easy to just change your thinking about fitness, but if you can find ways to make exercise feel less like an obligation and more like something that makes you happy, then you’re well on your way! Think of your next session as a chance to hang out with friends or chase a new personal record; whatever makes it feel worth doing. I myself love to dance, so you can see that my home workout studio looks more like a night club if anything 🙂
