How to stay motivated

One of my favorite quotes is by Abraham Lincoln. He said, “The best way to predict your future is to create it”. It’s a powerful statement and one that perfectly captures my thoughts on bodybuilding photography. If you want to inspire yourself, you first have to do something inspiring: If you want to progress, show progress. As a bodybuilder and as a professional fitness photographer, I’m constantly documenting every little detail of my life – my workouts, my outdoor adventures, and even my day-to-day life. Simple iPhone mirror selfies are just fine. Just seeing myself get bigger and stronger in photos helps me stay motivated – even if no one else ever sees them.

Although that might be nice at times, what really makes photographing yourself so worthwhile are those moments when you look back at an old photo of yourself and realize just how far you’ve come in such a short amount of time. When you compare where you were then with where you are now – it creates a whole new world of motivation! You’re physically different but also mentally different after going through grueling training sessions and strict dieting regimens. By capturing each step along your journey from beginning to end, it keeps things fresh in your mind at all times: You see exactly how much progress you’re making over time.

Preparing for the professional bodybuilding shoot

You’ve committed to a bodybuilding photoshoot and have spent weeks documenting your progress. But as you’re about to begin, some thoughts come to mind: Will my posing be okay? How much time should I spend on grooming? What do I wear? Here are some tips for getting everything out of your bodybuilding photography experience. A quality photographer will help you look your best and will bring out your confidence in front of the camera. Just remember that there’s no one way to pose; every person has his or her own unique expression, so don’t feel like you need to mimic what someone else has done before—and if it makes you uncomfortable, leave it in!

Selecting the best model photos

Professional bodybuilders might want a tight shot of their physique to document their progress, while fitness models may be looking for a more relaxed pose that shows off their toned arms and legs. Also, some people may want to show off their muscles in an environment that highlights his or her training—for example, showing them holding dumbbells in front of a mirror or outdoors surrounded by greenery, or in a more of a sensual boudoir setting for their private fan page. All these factors should play into what type of pictures professional bodybuilding photographers will shoot and how many; so make sure to discuss the creative concept before scheduling your professional photo session!

Post-production tips

Documenting progress is one of my favorite things to do as a photographer. I like seeing clients take a picture and think, Wow, I can’t believe that’s me! It’s also rewarding because your clients typically enjoy looking at their before-and-after photos—they’re proud of what they’ve accomplished! If you’re just starting out, it can be hard to know exactly how and when to shoot these types of photos. In any case, if you are working with me – you’re in good hands! I produce magazine-quality photographs with a variety of post-production options. All of it will be discussed at the initial creative conceptualization of your bodybuilding photoshoot.
